Normal-phase flash chromatography can separate CBG away from other cannabinoids but is challenged to separate CBD, THC, and other minor cannabinoids. My reversed-phase flash chromatography method separated many compounds while the system's in-line mass detector (I used an Isolera® Dalton 2000) assigned a MW to many of them, providing some idea of compound ID, Figure 2. Well, that’s not entirely true as some automated flash chromatography systems have a specific type of UV detector called a photo-diode array detector (PDA). With the PDA detector, such as the units installed on Biotage® Selekt and Isolera flash systems, the full UV spectrum of each separated compound is viewable for analysis. Bob is the Technical Specialist at Biotage for flash purification products. He has over 40 years of chromatography experience, more than 20 of which have come while working at Biotage.

In order to verify each UV-detected peak's identity, I used a flash chromatography system with an in-line mass detector (Biotage® Isolera Dalton 2000). This flash system simplifies flash chromatography by providing real time identification of an eluting compound’s molecular weight. Using a flash system with an in-line mass detector is also useful when the compounds have the same molecular weight but are separated, e.g. CBD and THC, and when trying to determine the "unknowns", Figure 5.

During the extraction process, CBG, along with all of the other cannabinoids and extractables is concentrated. Because many different compounds are co-extracted, CBG, as all other cannabinoids of interest, needs purification. A particularly effective tool for CBG purification is flash chromatography, which can separate it from the other major cannabinoids.
